Why do people do this? Why? No-one talks like that in real life. Where do they get it from?

Last time I was in Colchester I was a teenager, now I'm a mum of two and freelance journalist fresh from the streets of Hackney, trying to rediscover my roots. Or something.

It's US style. Have a look at US media and you'll see it all the time. (Though why British writers adopt it is another question...)
Really? I was singing The Owl and the Pussycat 100 times to HackneyChild the other day and realised I don't mind it in poems. "Said the cat to the owl, you elegant fowl".
I am not ignoring your writing tag thing. It just needs some thought.
